In Lees defense about not being aware all the hay had not been cut in all of the fields but you members hung in there and gave it your best shot and managed to come up with some decent finds and a lot of iron as usual which continues to open up more opportunity for more success for our hopefully next hunt there which will be in the early winter. I did not have much time to hunt with all the taking photos, putting up signs/club banners, getting water but I enjoy seeing the club hunting together. I was not very productive in my time hunting and after leaving Triune as hot and frustrated from a long day I was still not done I headed to the lake had the water machine in the back and got in the water which felt great just at dark worked it pretty good digging targets in the dark dumping them in my float screen could not see what I had recovered until I come out of the water at 9:30 and under the car lights a little 14k and man was it a long day.

1924 Presidential campaign (3 replies)

I thought I would hunt a couple of bulldozed lots in Nashville before I drove down to the Triune club hunt today. What I didn't expect was the heavy rain we had here early in the morning, which turned the lots into real mudpuddles. In any case, I got out between the showers and found a few little things. The item I like best is this presidential campaign pin, showing the faces of Robert M. La Follette and Burton K. Wheeler, running for President and VP respectively. Who? I had never heard of these guys either, so I looked them up and learned that La Follette ("Fightin' Bob") had been Republican Governor and later Senator from Wisconsin, then formed his own political party (the Progressive Party) and ran for president on that ticket in 1924. He lost of course, but still carried Wisconsin and 17% of the national popular vote. Not too bad.

Also found 2 CW roundballs, a good luck shoe token, and some brass odds and ends. But by the time I finished slogging through the mud, I was just too tired to come to Triune. That's age for you:smile:. Hope you all found lots of good stuff down there!

It consists of wings and a central disk that reads "Col. Roscoe Turner's Flying Corp" around the number "57". I looked up the good "Colonel", and it seems he thrived on a variety of risky jobs. He was a WWI balloon observer, later a lion tamer, a stunt pilot wing walker, a parachute jumper, and an airplane racer during the 1920s and 1930s.
The pin dates from 1934, when the Heinz 57 Food Co. sponsored him to fly their "57" airplane in races. Heinz also had a flying club for kids to join, and this tiny pin was worn by members. When I say "tiny", I really mean it: the pin measures only 1 1/4 inches long and 1/4 inch wide.

Next I explored around a bit and found a small spring. I found my first flat button on a small rise just above the spring, and the rest came from within 50 feet of the first button. In total I came home with 21 Flat buttons and a nice thimble. If anyone know an approximate general age for flat buttons I would like to know, I was hoping for a coin or 2 so I could get a a date to work with. Last time I found this many flat buttons I found an 1853 Half Dime.
Thanks

I told the wife I would be home at 630 to cook dinner, and at 625 I dug the buckle clip. so I decided to beg forgiveness when I got home and stuck around for another 30 minutes to try to find the rest of the buckle. No luck with that but I plan to return soon. I have found Civil War relics in almost every yard I've hunted that is within a few blocks from my house. Shown below are a coat and a cuff button from a Knights Templar Masonic uniform. The button fronts show a cross within a crown, surrounded by the legend "In Hoc Signo Vinces" (" In this sign you will conquer" -- referring to the vision Constantine the Great reported having before a major battle).

Both buttons have the same backmark: "M.C. Lilley & Co., Columbus O."

Apparently this company changed its name as follows:

M.C. Lilley & Co. 1865-1882

The M.C. Lilley & Co. 1882-1925

The Lilley & Co. 1925-1931 -- and other names after that.

So, this suggests the buttons were certainly made in the time interval 1865-1925, and probably 1865-1882.

Any information from you Masons or others out there would be most appreciated.
