I have always been interested in the Civil War and would love to get into relic hunting. The thing is, I don't have the slightest idea of where I can even start to look in the area that is legal. If anyone here can lead me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. I hope to sign up for DIV in the fall, but am itching to start looking now! Again, my main concern is to do it legally and not trespass, ect.

My buddy dug a Artillery button a few feet away from where it was found. I dug a nice staff button nearby as well. It measures 30.5 inches {blade only} but I cannot see any makers mark. My buddy MarkD. thinks it was a musician's sword. It still had a decent edge on it and I applied a little mineral oil to it. The homeowner eyeballed it sticking out of the dirt after he removed a shrub. I offered to trade him some relics for it and he agreed, he is a super guy. Anyone more info on it would be appreciated.
