Returned a Wedding Ring (no replies)

Hi My Fellow TH'ers
I was lucky enough to have gone to my Treasure Hunting Club Meeting back in October 2012 and was asked as a club if anyone would have time to help out a Minister's Wife locate her lost wedding ring. Well five or so were eager to go so we were provided a name, e-mail address, and phone number to get the details of the location and to speak with the Minister. Well four of us showed up on a frosty morning and set off across a small field to search for the lost ring. We soon realized that this field had a lot of gravel spread across the field over the years and it was all of impossible to dig into. The Minister came out a few times and shared his story about what had happened and narrowed down the search area. If seems the local Churches had a Village Fair and the Minister had been sitting in a dunk tank when his wife attempted to throw a softball at the target to dunk him. In the process of throwing the ball they thought her ring might have been flung into the grass. The problems were that they were not sure as they had both walked all over the field, greeting people, picking up trash, and generally having a great time. The worst part was they thought the ring may have been lost on the walk home or even in the yard around the Rectory. The four of us searched for seven hours and two of my friends decided that they had given it their best try but they felt that the ring had to have been lost elsewhere. They called it a day and left. After another hour the 3rd TH'er decided that it was a lost cause and called it a day as well. The Minister returned and was disappointed that the ring not been found but thanked me just the same and asked that I pass along his gratitude to all the others that had tried their best. I told him that I was not done and if I could not find his wife's ring I would provide him with one of the rings that I had found over the years so he could have a new ring made for her. The Minister returned to the Rectory and I started searching in the area where the Minister thought the ring might have been lost. I had to say a prayer as I was thinking that this ring had to have been lost somewhere else or maybe someone had found it on the ground and walked off with it. Well I searched for another half hour and was about to give up when my Whites DFX beeped and gave me a pull tab/ring icon at 2 inches. I stuck my shovel into the grass covered gravel dirt and pried up on the handle and in the middle of the grass clump I saw a shiny yellow metal item pop out of the ground. I had found the lost ring! I called the Minister on my cell phone and he ran over to receive the ring. It is a great feeling to help someone in need but even more so to help someone that helps so many others that are in need. GOD Bless America!

Free Help to find lost stuff... (no replies)

Hello ---

I wanted to let everyone here know that about 2-1/2 years ago several of us from many different clubs and metal detecting forums formed a group to offer assistance to anyone who had lost a piece of jewelry or other metal object, and could use a metal detectorist to help them search for it. Our group offers this help as a FREE service.

We don't charge fees for our efforts, nor do we expect rewards if we're successful. Our only goal is to help people in need, because we all believe it's just the right thing to do. As of today our Group has grown to about 1550 members now in 14 different countries and we're actively trying to continue our growth and help more & more people every day. In the past 2-1/2 years we have issued lost item reports for 585 items! Of these, we've had members available to search for 336 (57%) and 170 (51%) of those have been found!

My goal in posting this message is two-fold. First, to let you all know we're around so you'll know our group is available and you'll be able to ask us for help or recommend us to others if/when there's a need, and second, to see if you might wish to join our group and thus make yourself similarly available to help others for free in your area of the world also.

If you're wondering why you should consider joining The Lost My Stuff Group if you're in a club or group that already provides this service, the reason is simple -- so you'll be able to help more people!!! All Metal Detecting Clubs have members who are more than happy to help people search for lost stuff if asked. But, knowing who to contact when you lose something, especially when you're on vacation or away from home is difficult at best. The Lost My Stuff Group wants to change that. We want to become "The Place" to contact -- "The place" people know they can always contact to find some free help to find something, no matter where in the world they happen to be at the time. Joining the Lost My Stuff Group won't affect your relationship with your club at all, it will just make you much more available to people looking for help.

If you're interested in checking us out (and possibly even joining us!!) we are called The Lost My Stuff Group, and our website homepage is The Lost My Stuff Group.

FYI -- The way we've set things up, when a person signs up to become a member he/she also selects which areas of the world he/she wants to receive reports of lost items about. Whenever someone reports a lost item to our group looking for help, we forward their Lost Item Report to each of our members who have selected to receive reports from the area where that item was lost, and if any of those members are nearby and available they contact the person to help them look for their item.

Thanks for your attention!!

Please feel free to forward this post to any of your friends who might also be interested in our Group!!!

fogcity

Five Black Mountain residents were arrested in the case.

The Black Mountain Police approached the metal detecting enthusiasts and gave them the approximate location of where they thought the suspected criminals disposed of some items.

The treasure hunters did the rest of the work.

“They did a good job,” Sgt. Rob Austin, of the Black Mountain Police Department, said.

Mike Post, a Swannanoa Valley resident and dealer for Minelab brand metal detectors, recruited members of the Blue Ridge Metal Detecting Club and posted a message on Treasurenet.com, a Web site for metal detector enthusiasts.

They converged on the site Thursday at the end of Vance Avenue and Montreat’s In the Oaks campus, and began sweeping the area, Post said.

Another man out for a walk discovered some jewelry boxes after the searchers told him what they where looking for.

They were able to use their metal detectors to uncover the jewelry hidden beneath the leaves and dirt.

“It doesn’t take long for this stuff to bury itself,” Post said. “It settles, once it rains and the wind blows.”

Club members came from as far as Sylva, and one man who was traveling through the area from Illinois made a detour to attend after seeing the post on Treasurenet.com.

“It was a good idea,” Austin said. “It panned out.”

The jewelry is now being processed as evidence. Austin is reviewing descriptions from police reports filed immediately after the break-ins to match the jewelry with their owners.

He said the case underscores the need for homeowners to document their possessions with photographs and record the serial numbers of possessions they own.

Having photos can help homeowners claim their stolen goods if they are recovered, and serial numbers can help law enforcement officials track items through nationwide databases.

Bryan Scott Lang, 22, was charged with seven counts of felony breaking and entering and seven counts of larceny after breaking and entering. Christopher Alan Lang, 20, was charged with five counts of felony breaking and entering, five counts of larceny after breaking and entering, and one count of larceny of a firearm.

Abby Elizabeth Edwards, 19, was charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, one count of larceny after breaking and entering, two counts of receiving stolen goods, and two counts of obtaining property under false pretenses.

Brittany Leshea Swafford, 21, was charged with one count of felony breaking and entering, one count of larceny after breaking and entering.

Scott Alexander Coe Boyd, 19, was charged with five counts of obtaining property under false pretenses, four felony counts of receiving stolen goods, and one felony count of breaking and entering.

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,342472.0.html

Lost at July 4th celebration - Car keys For BMW (no replies)

I do not have pictures to show. Our town held a July 4th celebration this past weekend with children's rides, bands, all types vendors. While me and partner were hunting for dropped coins, jewelry, etc., the local town police came to us and told us about a family that had lost there key to their car.We asked the usually questions and hunted the park the rest of the day with out any luck finding the key. We made another trip to the park Monday since we had the day off work. I told partner my mission was to find the key. Had hunted for 3 hours with no luck, except the coins I found. Just before quitting for the day, I made a zig zag pattern on the rest of the ground I had yet to cover. After going about 100 yards, I spotted the key on a pink shoe lace. Called out to partner I had succeeded in my quest and now it was time to find the local police. We went to the police department to return the key. The same officer was on duty and could not believe we found it! As it turned out it was a key to a BMW. They should be some happy people, these type keys are expensive to replace. Was told these keys have some sort of "chip" inside that will only allow the key to operate if it matches the car.
As I will never know this because this type car is on my list........ but out of reach.

(no replies)

Got a call from my step son asking if I could help find some property markers. Went over to the church and found the first one a foot in the driveway. Took about five minutes. Marked it moved on to the second and third, which weren't that easy. The second was in a large honeysuckle root, about a foot in diameter, with trash all around it. The third was near the sidewalk with dig holes all around it. So I asked what is that, because I didn't want the blame for all those bad holes, the pasture said it was a new detectorist trying to help. He didn't know how to set the detector up correctly and didn't have any success. Makes me feel good to help others. Even if its the Lords house. I wonder if he will remember my good deed? Thanks for looking, Ken.:lol:

This is my first post here but have been a member on other forums for along time, been in the hobby for 25+ years. I didn't know about this forum until Keith of Bonnie Blue Detectors mentioned it to me (thanks Keith). To make a long story short, I bought a detector off a forum and a small coil for it from Keith. With all the things going on the day I sent out the money orders (one sent to Texas for the detector & one sent to Georgia for the coil) I ended getting them mixed up, I sent a money order for $175.00 for the coil & I sent a money order for $50.00 for the detector. So I called the fellas and told them what I did, and they told me not to worry about it. Keith said he would take out his $$$ for the coil and send the remaining $$$ to the guy in Texas for me. So all is well in the end & I ended up finding out about a forum I didn't know existed. Hats off to ya Keith for being such a good honest guy, need more poeple like you in the world. Thanks! Last night, it would have been better if I had longer notice, my 10 year old daughter asked me to bring some of my relics to show in class today; they are studying the Civil War. Well, I gathered some of my best examples and took as many relics and reference books I could in a suit case. When I got there and started setting up on a table, every one was amazed at the relics. To top it off I gave the whole class a fired three ringer, the teacher a gardner and eagle button, and left all of my reference books there for all to use, on loan of course. I touched on several topics of the war and told them how I found these relics and the whole class wants a detector, look out Don D. One thing I know, these kids will remember the things I showed today and maby be more interested learning. If anyone has any tips on these kinds of show and tells please share.

Thanks for reading, Brent.

Lost Wedding Ring ~ FOUND (no replies)

Success !!! Daniel Heramb is one happy guy and he’s not going to get beat-up by his wife...

Daniel had found one of the clubs I belong to on the web and he sent out an urgent email for help - he had lost his wedding band in the sand. It had fallen out of his pocket. Both he and his wife were very upset.

Ed Travis, president of one of the clubs I belong to: Georgia Research and Recovery and North Georgia Relic Hunters Association, sent out a mass email to everyone on the roster and I volunteered, not knowing how large of an area it was to hunt. I thought it was at his house near a sand pile.... far be it. It was at the physical outdoors facility at a local university. Personally, while looking at the large area, I thought it's not going to be found...

The ring had been lost somewhere around or at the volleyball court at Kennesaw State University. Daniel didn’t really know where he had lost it. I began a slow search outside the court area and then started walking a slow grid inside the area, covering and overlapping each pass. During the hunt I kept on finding coins and more coins.... After 1/2 of the court had been covered I began on the other side. I was about 1/2 through hunting the other side of the court when I yelled out to Daniel, who was looking around in the grassy area near the pit, “This doesn’t sound like a nickel or a penny, nor a dime.... (Gold has it's own unique tone to me) Before then, as he was walking next to me, I could tell him what the sound sounded like before I scooped the tone and was right on every coin that was recovered.

As he was walking over to me I reached down and picked up his wedding band. He was one happy fellow. All he could do was smile... He offered to buy me and my wife dinner, etc. etc..... I just said “no, that’s alright. Next time Daniel, just keep it in your pants.... “ We both had a good chuckle....

I'll let this is my “find of the month..”

Jim

<div id="div_9397afdc97c621ac65e83cbe672c6c13"

I posted this on Beach & Water before I saw this forum. Enjoy (no replies)

I was back on the beach today (Friday) searching for ring number three when I saw a girl, around 9 or 10 years old, screaming at her dad saying that her mother was going to kill her for loosing her ring. I asked the dad what kind of ring it was and he said he didn't even know that she had one (oh boy). Anyway, he said to his daughter that he would just go buy her a new one. The girl insisted that her mother was going to kill her. I ask the girl where she was playing in the sand. We walked down to the water and within a minute I had found the ring and returned it to her. It was a good thing dad let me look for the ring. It turned out to be a small 14k white gold ring with two light blue stones. The father and daughter were both very thankful and the daughter didn't have to face the wrath of her mother. LOL! Even though this little treasure was returned, the satisfaction of doing so was reward enough. I'll still chalk that one up as number three for the season.

So the take for the day was 2 quarters, 1 dime, 1 nickel and 7 pennies totaling .72¢. Helping one very relieved little girl was priceless. Huh, sounds like a commercial. LOL!

Upon further inspection I found a name inscribed. Contacted Citadel college via e-mail. Two days later the owner contacted me. Verified that the ring in fact belonged to him. We made arrangements for his friend to come and pick it up for him.He picked it up this past Monday (Oct. 27,2008).

Now for the kicker to this post. I also found a Landrum High School State Baseball Championship ring the same week. I have also found the owner. I am mailing it back to him after DIV week.

Everyone says I should of played the lottery. I told them that I had already used up all my luck finding two rings in the same week.

CIVIL WAR CANNONBALL KILLS VIRGINIA RELIC HUNTER... (no replies)

Sorry guys I didnt know where to put this sad story....I figured someone may know this gentlemen.... If it needs to be moved elsewheres please do....

Civil War cannonball kills Virginia relic collector
By STEVE SZKOTAK (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
May 02, 2008 9:23 PM EDT
CHESTER, Va. - Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.

As an adult, he crisscrossed the Virginia countryside in search of wartime relics - weapons, battle flags, even artillery shells buried in the red clay. He sometimes put on diving gear to feel for treasures hidden in the black muck of river bottoms.

But in February, White's hobby cost him his life: A cannonball he was restoring exploded, killing him in his driveway.

More than 140 years after Lee surrendered to Grant, the cannonball was still powerful enough to send a chunk of shrapnel through the front porch of a house a quarter-mile from White's home in this leafy Richmond suburb.

White's death shook the close-knit fraternity of relic collectors and raised concerns about the dangers of other Civil War munitions that lie buried beneath old battlefields. Explosives experts said the fatal blast defied extraordinary odds.

"You can't drop these things on the ground and make them go off," said retired Col. John F. Biemeck, formerly of the Army Ordnance Corps.

White, 53, was one of thousands of hobbyists who comb former battlegrounds for artifacts using metal detectors, pickaxes, shovels and trowels.

"There just aren't many areas in the South in which battlefields aren't located. They're literally under your feet," said Harry Ridgeway, a former relic hunter who has amassed a vast collection. "It's just a huge thrill to pull even a mundane relic out of the ground."

After growing up in Petersburg, White went to college, served on his local police force, then worked for 25 years as a deliveryman for UPS. He retired in 1998 and devoted most of his time to relic hunting.

He was an avid reader, a Civil War raconteur and an amateur historian who watched History Channel programs over and over, to the mild annoyance of his wife.

"I used to laugh at him and say, 'Why do you watch this? You know how it turned out. It's not going to be any different,'" Brenda White said.

She didn't share her husband's devotion, but she was understanding of his interest.

"True relic hunters who have this passion, they don't live that way vicariously, like if you were a sports fanatic," she said. "Finding a treasure is their touchdown, even if it's two, three bullets."

Union and Confederate troops lobbed an estimated 1.5 million artillery shells and cannonballs at each other from 1861 to 1865. As many as one in five were duds.

Some of the weapons remain buried in the ground or river bottoms. In late March, a 44-pound, 8-inch mortar shell was uncovered at Petersburg National Battlefield, the site of an epic 292-day battle. The shell was taken to the city landfill and detonated.

Black powder provided the destructive force for cannonballs and artillery shells. The combination of sulfur, potassium nitrate and finely ground charcoal requires a high temperature - 572 degrees Fahrenheit - and friction to ignite.

White estimated he had worked on about 1,600 shells for collectors and museums. On the day he died, he had 18 cannonballs lined up in his driveway to restore.

White's efforts seldom raised safety concerns. His wife and son Travis sometimes stood in the driveway as he worked.

"Sam knew his stuff, no doubt about it," said Jimmy Blankenship, historian-curator at the Petersburg battleground. "He did know Civil War ordnance."

An investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will not be complete until the end of May, but police who responded to the blast and examined shrapnel concluded that it came from a Civil War explosive.

Experts suspect White was killed while trying to disarm a 9-inch, 75-pound naval cannonball, a particularly potent explosive with a more complex fuse and many times the destructive power of those used by infantry artillery.

Biemeck and Peter George, co-author of a book on Civil War ordnance, believe White was using either a drill or a grinder attached to a drill to remove grit from the cannonball, causing a shower of sparks.

Because of the fuse design, it may have appeared as though the weapon's powder had already been removed, leading even a veteran like White to conclude mistakenly that the ball was inert.

The weapon also had to be waterproof because it was designed to skip over the water at 600 mph to strike at the waterline of an enemy ship. The protection against moisture meant the ball could have remained potent longer than an infantry shell.

Brenda White is convinced her husband was working on a flawed cannonball, and no amount of caution could have prevented his death.

"He had already disarmed the shell," she said. "From what I was told, there was absolutely nothing he had done wrong, that there was a manufacturing defect that no one would have known was there."

After White's death, about two dozen homes were evacuated for two days while explosives experts collected pieces from his collection and detonated them.

Today, there is little evidence of the Feb. 18 blast. The garage where White did most of his work is still crammed with his discoveries, many painstakingly restored and mounted. Rusted horseshoes are piled high in the crook of a small tree.

White's digging partner, Fred Lange, hasn't had the heart to return to his relic hunting.

"I truly miss him," Lange said. "Not a day that goes by that I don't think of him."

Returned a nice find to owner (no replies)

I had been eyeing this civil war era house near me that is under renovation. I began talking with the owner over a couple of months and he agreed to allow me to hunt the yar dof his restoration project. Over this same period I learned about his passion for restoring the old home and heard about some of his other projects in town which were also restorations. He is in many ways like us with a passion for preserving history and community service. All you have to do is look at his projects to see the care he takes on his restorations.

Well the day finally arrived when i was able to hunt and I ended up finding only one coin- an 1863 British penny! Vicky as I call her had a beautiful patina and is a unique find for this area.

Well I showed vicky off for a few days then thought I should return her to my friend as it would make a fitting conversation piece for discussing the town history and the history of the old home at the local town preservation meetings where he is a member. So I drove over to see my friend as he was again working on the old place. I walked up to him and placed Vicky in his hand - he was so pleased to see her and I was glad to give a small piece of the home's history back to him. We then talked about how the coin may have come ot be in the yard and about the glory days of the town. It just seemed fitting to bring her back home.

<div id="div_a1e191af1838217bf89f4d6f5abaf2a2"
