Mike Russell , who was involved with this site in the past, wrote a book on pipes and how to date them. He has published tons of information on pipes , inkwells , bottles and other excavated relics. I'm not sure how to contact him but his publications are worth their weight in Cofederate buttons ! He lived in Northern Virginia but I have lost contact with him. Great pipe , may have been made at Pby 55thVa - Relic & Bottle

Looks like the top to a mid 19th century fire tong. There are as many variations as there were companies that made them but most are similar in design.by 55thVa - Relic & Bottle

Randy , I switched to Grey Ghost a couple of years ago and I too immediatly noticed the difference. My GPX 4800 came with Kost headphones, which in MHO , are terrible for metal detecting. To think a $4000 detector manufacturer can't come up with something better.! I use Grey Ghost on my wife's MXT as well as my MXT backup. See you at XXIII !by 55thVa - Diggin' In Virginia
Not to my knowledge , Read sabots are brass or an alloy of copper and brass. Where's Peter George when we need him ?by 55thVa - Relic & Bottle
It looks like brass and much too thin to be from a Hotchkiss which are lead.. It may be from a CS Read.by 55thVa - Relic & Bottle
Thank you Rose , you are well aware how much this beautiful poem touched me. There will always be a place locked away in our hearts for those we loved and lost especially at this time of year.by 55thVa - Diggin' In Virginia

Jim , I too have found lots of fired bullets in that area. I do not think they had anything to do with the battle. Shot bullets from the battle would be mostly carbine and pistol bullets. I think the ones you have found and those that I dug are from target shooting and the ,69 cal were falling short of the smaller cal. impact area. There are always target areas around winter camps and not alwaysby 55thVa - Diggin' In Virginia

Don , from the pics on your website I can't tell if it fits around your neck. My wife has trouble working her detector for long periods , will this help ?by 55thVa - Diggin' In Virginia
I have hunted relics with a metal detector for better than 60 years , yes that's right , 60 years ! I have found 1000 + plates and buckles including 52 in one afternoon, 8 1/2 marked CS plates and most everything else except a pistol and an ID badge. I would be willing to find just one relic at XXIII if it was a marked ID pin or ID tag. I hope you find yours !by 55thVa - Diggin' In Virginia

There have been volumns of books written on artifacts excavated by relic hunters on every subject from buttons , bullets , buckles and plates , bottles , etc , etc. Show me one book written and published by a "professional archie". We have professional archeologists in our ranks, indeed at the DIV events. His remarks are self serving and worthless ! JMOby 55thVa - Relic & Bottle
