I had dug maybe one other at another site but saw a few of these dug at the DIV. I think they are nose cast enfields IMHO. Danby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia
I still can't believe the amount of good buttons you have pulled from that spot. I have not picked up my machine in three weeks either, glad you got out and found one more. Danby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle

I have never seen one on a CW military issued saddle, but have seen them on civilian ones especially from the earlier ages. I believe Hume also found evidence of these at the Carter's Grove plantation here in VA when he excavated saddles from a pit and found them with them. As I said, i associate them with those and like (other strapend weights for other needs). Danby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle
They used them from colonial era to the 1800s. Used to weigh down strap-ends on horses and like items. They are crafted in a multitude of shapes and sizes, typically in a shield or rectangle. HH Danby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle
Thanks man - yea I have dug them in a few different areas. All of the ones in the pic here either came from Wyse Forks or Wilmington area. I have dug them at a few other areas in NC as well. Danby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle
I apologize for posting these even though they are not recently dug, but the original post is buried. Ro asked for close ups of a few of these so I have included them. 1 is a three ringer, another is a enfield with a "57" marked base, and another is a williams type III. I have been fortunate to have a few good spots over the years that yielded dozens of these. One of my hunting buddies recoby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle
Most machines you will see mentioned here are on the same level depending on how you use them and learn them. (MXT, T2, F75, ATGold) I all say are about the same, with each having their own advantages. For example the T2 I believe to be the deepest in all metal, the ATGold the deepest in discrim with the best target separation, the MXT just a monster all around machine (perhaps not the best atby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle

All pine "lighter wood" knots. Some have a deformed look about them, others have very little wood left around the bullet. I have a few others that were really cool, but only had pictures of these. Some you can see where I had to cut away the wood to expose the bullet and does show some of the trail left behind the impact site. Danby HomeGuardDan - Relic & Bottle

It would be interesting. I personally don't know if I could use a week of vacation for it. Would much rather have a mini dig at a smaller or other site, or a camp out at sites with pits. However, I say this now, but would probably find a way to dig for a week he he. Danby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia

That is one of the few Union State Seals that have eluded me over the years. It was great to see the two of you working below me. It seemed like I watched so many just quickly move around while you guys were just as methodically digging as I was. Danby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia

I joked with John that he should charge me less for the hunts as I don't get to see the entire site. I stay put and carefully work every area I am in. I was there all day Friday, all but the last hour of Saturday (where I decided to hit the CS camp I had luck at last year) and ended up back there for the first part of Sunday. My own little 25 yard circle produced 75% of everything I found at tby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia
I would not say I have it down to a science but after using a Whites Blue & Gray for 15+ years I just have an ear for those slight threshold changes. Best trick is just go REALLY slow. HH Danby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia
Sorry I know I am not a social digger at times ha ha, on a mission, so it was quiet, but I did think it was cool looking up in the snow and seeing the three of us work that spot at the end of the day. Looking forward to the next time. Danby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia
Hate that I missed you at this one. You are too kind, I just have luck on my side. Dad did not have a great hunt, but we always have fun together. Danby HomeGuardDan - Diggin' In Virginia
