I just returned home from my father's funeral
March 10, 2019 09:44AM
My father passed away last Monday and I went back to Kansas for the funeral. My dad was the last of six brothers that joined the Navy. My grandmother was Navy Mother of the Year in 1956 for having all six sons in the Navy. When she passed away she was given full military honors which I just found out this week was because that was a national honor. I remember white uniforms as far as you could see. Only the full honors get the 21 gun salute. My dad and his brothers only got the Taps and Flag. The military only sends a two man team. One senior and one junior. Only active duty or high honors get the full military service. This had to be the best folding of the flag that I have seen. The Petty Officer inspected the flag very close after the folding and made adjustments as needed then he presented the flag to me. My daughter surprised me walking in at visitation. I had no idea since she was on a military base I thought would be too far for her to come. But she caught a military flight home and all my family knew but me. Well kept secret.

So sorry to hear of your Father and fellow Veteran passing away Randy, our American

Legion Post works with an Honor Guard from other services and we always give the fallen Veteran a 21 Gun Salute.

yeah the local VFW and Legion can do the 21 gun salute but most in that area of Kansas were not able to. Had to have an active Navy team from Kansas City come in to do the funeral.
