Widespread Flu outbreak...
March 22, 2019 02:17AM
Greetings my fellow DIVers! A few minutes of your time to give you all a "heads up" on the current state of Virginia (and surrounding States) and influenza activity. Virginia and all surrounding states (with the exception of Tenn) are experiencing WIDE SPREAD Influenza activity with the majority being Flu A. The 2 predominate strains are H1N1 (earlier in the season) and H3N2 (more common now and more virulent). All influenzas are HIGHLY contagious and easily spread from person to person with a simple cough or sneeze.

My point... If you feel ill with cold/flu like symptoms ACCOMPANIED with BODY ACHES and FEVER/CHILLS, you SHOULD NOT (IMHO) come to the meeting and spread the good news to all your friends and fellow diggers. I would encourage Ms. Rose to have hand sanitizer at the main registration desk and raffle/merchant tables. Carrying a personal size bottle of hand sanitizer is a very good idea.

Even though the CDC Flu vaccine match was better than most years past, it does not provide 100% protection. The H3N2 strain we are seeing is not well covered by the vaccine and is a particularly BAD beastie!

If you come down with what you believe are Flu like symptoms, you need to start TAMIFLU within 48 hours to have any effect on the duration and severity of the illness. Most walk in clinics like Med Express can test and prescribe medications for the Flu. Over the counter meds like Tylenol cold and flu, Alka-seltzer cold and flu, etc... can help with symptoms, body aches, cough, congestion.

Finally, even though I am authoring this public service message, I AM NOT handing out prescriptions/samples of TAMIFLU to DIV participants. Don't ask and I wont have to tell you no.

This is a BAD flu season and the H3N2 strain in particular is severe. It can make a normally healthy person VERY ill (ICU level ill). Be vigilant, good hand washing, cover cough and frequent hand sanitizer use can help you stay healthy. When you get 300 diggers in a room with a lot of hand shakes and hugs, it make the spreading of something like the Flu very easy....

See you all in a few days!

Doc Rodney (No I'm not writing you any Viagra... or Tamiflu!)

Wow! Probably doesn't do a bunch but when I know I'm going to around possibilities of getting sick I load up on Vitamin C. Seems to help for me anyways.

Thanks Doc Cox. I'm sure it does not need to be added that if you are Diabetic, as I am, or have other chronic problems especially respiratory be extra vigilant even if immunized.

We will implement the...NO hugs and NO handshaking rule that we did a few years ago. As much as I hate to do this as I'm a huge hugger it is very important.

Let's spread the word to everyone in case they don't see this so we don't spread the flu......we don't want to get sick and we don't want any of you to get sick and ruin your whole DIV week.

The college has hand sanitizer at all doors but I will have some on all of the DIV tables. I encourage the vendors to do the same.
Typical incubation is 1-4 days after exposure....

Which means if you contract it at the meeting, you will be sick before the end of the dig. Also, it is possible to BE CONTAGIOUS 24 hours before you experience typical flu symptoms. I usually don't make a big deal out of the Flu but this is one of the worse seasons I have seen. I have put several HEALTHY veterans in ICU with Influenza Sepsis. BAD Beastie!
