Civil War medicine jars and bottles dug at Brandy Rock
March 31, 2019 12:34PM
My brother John & I dug out a deep pit on Wisconsin Hill day 1. The pit contained 6 ceramic jars, two bottles, 6 stoppers, a flat ceramic tile and the rotted remains of a wicker trunk. All of the items are related to medicine kits of the period.

UPDATE on the mystery hardware recovered with the medicine bottles & jars....
April 16, 2019 01:57PM
Thanks to a lead from Eric Champigny and some help from the good folks from the Monson, MA Historical Commission, I was able to confirm that the hardware my brother & I recovered from this pit was from a very rare wicker-work field surgeon's knapsack. The example in Monson, MA is probably the only example still in existence. John & I were able to salvage most of the hardware and some bits of wicker, but we were not able to save what was left of the tin inserts. I'm thrilled to get a solid identification on these, as we were pretty perplexed as to what it was when we were digging it. Thanks again Eric for help with this!

I've contacted the National Museum of Civil War Medicine here in Maryland. I plan to pay them a visit soon and do some more research.

I think you're exactly right Eric....

This example matches some of the hardware we found.

Notice the two different turn-key latches on the illustration, compared with the ones we found.
