Mississippi "I" button from DIV 45 cleaned up...
April 01, 2019 12:59PM
First, I want to praise God for granting me health and safety so that I could participate in both DIV 44 and 45!

I live in middle TN where a great deal of the CW was fought and reminders of that war abound. I pass by the National Cemetery at Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro at least three times a week, where 6,100 Union soldiers are buried. Each headstone serves as monument to the soldier who fought and died there.

To me, this button stands as a tiny monument accidently left behind, telling us there was once a young soldier from Mississippi who lived right here for a while, a long 700+ miles from home and family. Most who see it imagine what his life here might have been like and possible circumstances surrounding the button’s departure.
I just hope he didn’t lose anything more valuable than this button.

The relics we are privileged to find bring such imaginings and context to the sites we hunt. When we take our small memorials home with us, invite your kids and grand kids along with you as you imagine the story behind the relic.

Want to also give a shout out to Tony Hochstetler who ID'd the button for me! Tony epitomizes the generosity that DIV diggers are known for.

Once again, thanks to John, Rose, and the committee for providing such unique opportunities for us diggers!
Hope to see you all in the fall!
Blessings!
Don Bailey

Some button trivia...
April 03, 2019 12:01AM
According to McGuinn's book on military button makers, Hyde and Goodrich sold 277 gross of these "I" buttons to the state of Mississippi on May 6, 1861 for $3.50/ gross. That's about 2.5 cents per button!
That one is on my list to find, nice job. (n/t)

So well stated Don , yes , each relic is a reminder of men who fought for a cause. Whether they fought forb the North or South , so many made the ultimate sacrifice and we are so Blessed to
find pieces of history they left behind. Each relic I recover projects a mental image of the brave young men who were on this site 150+ years ago fighting for what they believed in and forming the wonderful history of our country..
